The long-cherished Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be opened by June 2022, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said today.
While addressing a programme at Osmani Smriti Auditorium in Dhaka this noon, the cabinet secretary said, “The Padma Bridge is a reality now.”
He expressed the optimism when work on installation of the last span of the 6.15km bridge from Munshiganj's Mawa to Shariatpur's Zajira, was going on in full swing.
After completion of other work, the bridge will connect the capital Dhaka with 21 southwestern districts, thus contributing to the country’s economic prosperity.
The first span of the bridge was installed on September 30, 2017 on pillars 37 and 38.
The bridge has two decks – the lower deck is for train track, while the upper level will be dedicated for road transport.
Bangladesh is implementing the Pamda Bridge project with its own funds after the World Bank had cancelled financing over corruption allegations.
Besides, while addressing a virtual programme, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, said the impossible task has been made possible due to the bold and courageous leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“Our Prime Minister has shown the entire world that we too can,” Quader also General Secretary of the ruling Awami League said.
