The deadly novel coronavirus claimed 38 more lives and infected 1,153 people afresh at different parts of the country including capital Dhaka in the last 24 hours ending 8:00am on Sunday.

With the updated data, the total death toll from the virus rose to 7,280 while the number of infection to 5, 00, 713, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said it in a press release this afternoon.

Around 13,316 samples were tested at different government authorised laboratories across the country and 1,153 samples were found positive for the virus during the period, the press release said.

Meanwhile, at least 1926 people were released from different hospitals across the country after their recovery from the infection, pushing the total number of recovery to 4, 37,527.

According to the DGHS data, the infection rate shows 8.66 percent while the recovery rate 87.38 percent in the last 24 hours.

Bangladesh detected the first coronavirus case on March 8 and recorded the first death case on March 18 since the first cases were reported in December last year.

Global situation

The overall number of coronavirus cases surpassed 7, 66,99,2020 globally, while the deaths surged to 16, 93,402 till Sunday, according to the updated statistics of worldometers.  

Besides, Johns Hopkins University’s Centre for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE), in its latest data said the US recorded 17,649, 057 cases with 316,144 deaths, the highest figures in the world while India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,004,599 and death toll rose to 145,136 till today.

The other countries with more than a million confirmed cases are Brazil (7,213,155), France (2,516,957), Russia (2,792,615), the UK (2,010,077), Italy (1,938,083), Spain (1,797,236), Turkey (2,004,285), Argentina (1,537,169), Germany (1,494,063), Mexico (1,301,546), Colombia (1,496,062), Poland (1,194,110) and Iran (1,152,072), the CSSE figures showed.
