The VAT intelligence team of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) raided a fast food joint in the capital’s Uttara on Monday on charges of VAT evasion.
A team of the VAT Audit Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (VATAIID), led by its deputy director Tanvir Ahmed, conducted the raid at the Manik Foods on specific allegations of VAT evasion, reads a press release.
On December 18, a customer after payment of bill wanted a VAT receipt, but the shop did not provide him with the document. The customer then filed a complaint with the VAT intelligence directorate.
During the raid today, the NBR team found that the document the fast food shop showed against its sales did not have any VAT number on it.
The team primarily discovered a huge mismatch between monthly VAT returns and actual sales.
The VAT intelligence team also seized commercial documents and a computer for further investigation.
The filing of a case against the shop is underway.
