Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said that a project for upgrading Dhaka-Sylhet highway into four lanes will be placed in the meeting of Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec) by January 2021 for its approval.
Quader said this while addressing a virtual programme from his secretariat office in Dhaka to inaugurate BRTC bus services on Sylhet-Moulvibazar-Srimangal and Sylhet-Habiganj routes this morning.
The government has recently arranged thousands of buses and trucks to garner people’s trust in Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) operated transport services, Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said.
“Now it is needed to expand BRTC network and improve skills of its overall management,” the Awami League leader said.
Claiming that it is possible to reduce irregularities in the service sectors by using technology, Quader asked the concerned authorities to monitor BRTC’s trips management by installing GPS system.
Alongside, Quader also instructed the respective authorities to increase revenue in the transport sector by using locally developed operation software and strengthening uninterrupted monitoring.
About the recent spike in road accident, he said the incident of road accident goes up due to the foggy weather in the winter season and called upon owners and workers in the transport sector to run their vehicles cautiously.
He also asked the owners and workers in the transport sector to follow the government imposed health guidelines in carrying passengers to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
About BNP’s politics, the Awami League leader said BNP takes part in the election and stays aside on polling day and they believe in such democracy.
Referring to BNP’s programmes on border killings, Quader said their programme is nothing but eyewash.
The government is more sincere in protecting the country’s bordering area by initiating its best level of efforts to bring the border killing incidents under control, he added.
