Dhaka North and South City Corporations will jointly build four bus terminals at four strategic entrance points of Dhaka in order to reduce traffic jam in the capital and to bring discipline in the public transport sector.
DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh jointly visited the proposed project sites Bhatulia and Birulia in Savar, on the outskirt of the capital Dhaka, on Wednesday to implement the project immediately.
After visiting the project sites, the two mayors told the mass media that they are going to undertake the project so that the inter-district buses cannot enter the capital.
As part of action plan of the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee, the two mayors visited the project sites with a view to rearrange the bus routes in and around the capital.
While talking to journalists, Taposh said they want to restore discipline in the transport sector and thus they have selected 10 places and visited four of the spots for building the inter-district bus terminals.
After visiting Hemayetpur, Kanchpur and Keraniganj, they will place a proposal in the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting to be held in January for its approval, Taposh said.
Citing references from different countries, Taposh said intercity buses or public transports are not allowed to ply in the city streets but Mohakhali and Saidabad bus terminals are being used as inter-district terminals.
Responding to a query, he said the construction work of the bus terminals will be started in the next year if the four prospective places are selected immediately based on opinions of all the concerned people.
Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Saidabad bus terminals will be used as city terminal, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam told a questioner.
