Bangladesh recorded 28 more deaths and 1.014 fresh cases of deadly coronavirus from different parts of the country including capital Dhaka in the last 24 hours ending 8:00am on Thursday.

Now, the total death toll from the virus reached 7,559 while the total number of infection stood at 5, 13,510, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) disclosed the figures in a press release this afternoon.

In the last 24 hours, some 13,254 samples were tested at government authorised laboratories across the country and 1.014 samples were found positive, the DGHS said in the press release.

As many as 1,389 patients were declared free from the virus in the same period, taking the total number of recovery to 4, 57,459, the press release said.

The updated data shows the recovery rate 89 percent while the infection rate 7.65 percent.

Bangladesh recorded the first Covid-19 case on March 8 and the first death case on March 18.

According to the worldometers, some 18, 14,649 people have died while some 8, 31,78, 070 people have been infected by the virus since its outbreak in China a year ago.

The government has been warning of the second wave of coronavirus in the winter season and calling upon people to wear mask by introducing no mask no service policy at all public and private offices across the country.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Wednesday voiced satisfaction as the Oxford-AstraZeneca developed Covid-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the United Kingdom.

“It is of course a good news for us. We will get the same vaccine by mid-January next year,” Zahid Maleque said this while addressing a programme at Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) auditorium in Dhaka.

Alongside India, Bangladesh will be given the vaccine at the same time, Maleque said adding that more five to six crore doses of vaccine will be given by the World Health Organisation by June in 2021.

The country will be much safer with the application of five to six crore vaccines if it is not required for around 40 percent of total population aged below 18 and 35 lakh expected mothers in the country, he said.
