Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Ayesha Khanam passed away when she was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka early this morning. She was 74.

Maleka Banu, general secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, confirmed the death in a press statement this morning.

The valiant freedom fighter has been suffering from cancer since long and she was admitted to a hospital as her condition deteriorated last night. Later, she breathed her last around 5:00am, said the press statement.

Her body will be taken to the central office of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad in Segunbagicha area and where people from different classes and professions will pay their last respect to her.

Her body will be taken to Netrokona and she will be buried at her family graveyard after a namaz-e-janaza.

Ayesha Khanam, who was vice-president of Chhatra Union, took part in student movement in 1962, mass upsurge in 1969 and Liberation War in 1971.

Fazilatunnesa Indira, state minister for Women and Children Affairs, expressed deep shock over the death of the freedom fighter.

In a message the junior minister, said Ayesha Khanam was an active organiser of the country’s all progressive movement.

“She worked entire her life to establish women’s rights in all strata in the society. Her death is an irreparable loss for us,” the minister said.

The minister also sought eternal peace of the departed soul and extended sympathy to the bereaved family members.
