Dhaka (Nov 4, 2020): The University Grants Commission (UGC) is planning to grant interest free loan to each 41, 501 insolvent students of different public universities across the country to bring them under the coverage of digital class system.

Amid the evolving situation of the coronavirus pandemic, the UGC in line with the government decision is going to provide the loan so that the students of the insolvent families can buy smart phones to attend their digital class sessions.

A total of Tk 8,000 will be given to 41, 501 students of 39 public universities, the decision was taken at a virtual meeting held with Prof Kazi Shahidullah in the chair today.     

While addressing the meeting, the UGC chairman said that the online education of the public universities will put a positive impact significantly amid the pandemic of the coronavirus.   

And with the loan, the students will be more proactive and sincere in attending their online classes using the smart phones, he said.

The meeting reached a decision to send the money to students through their respective bank accounts by January 31 next year.

The students will have to return the loan in four installments during their educational lives. If anyone, he or she can return the loan at a time without any installment.

The UGC on August 9 sent letters to the vice chancellors of all public universities seeking list of their insolvent students for giving the loan.

In response to the UGC’s call, the authorities of the public universities sent the list of their student.
