The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) on Thursday suspended the driver of a BRTC-run bus for ferrying more passengers than the seating capacity and issued a show-cause notice to the manager of a depot under which the bus operates.

When the bus was plying the city street on Wednesday evening with passengers more than the limit, it came to the attention of Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, reads a press release.

The minister then rang up the BRTC chairman and instructed him to take action in this regard.

In line with that, bus driver Shohrab Hossain was suspended on Thursday. In addition, Nur-e-Alam, manager of the Mohammadpur bus depot under which the bus operates, has been asked to respond to a show-cause notice issued for his negligence in this regard.

Earlier, the BRTC bus drivers and assistants were instructed not to take on more passengers than the capacity. To stem the spread of coronavirus, the use of masks was also made mandatory for the bus drivers, assistants, and passengers, the press release adds.
