Dhaka (Nov 15, 2020): A group of armed hoodlums today robbed Tk around 9.82 lakh from a branch of Sonali Bank at Jibon Nagar upazila of Chuadanga district by holding all staffers of the bank hostage at gun point.

Three people, wearing helmet and personal protective equipment, entered the bank office in the guise of customers around 1:15pm, according to Abu Bakar Siddique, manager of the branch.

Later, they held all security guards and officials of the branch at gun point and robbed robbed Tk 8,82,900 from cash counter, Abu Bakar said.

The armed hoodlums first held a security guard with a sharp knife and closed the door of the bank office and the rest two hoodlums forced all staffers and officials to take shelter in a room inside the office, he said.

On information, members of Border Guard Bangladesh from Uthali Camp and police from Jibon Nagar Police Station rushed to the spot and started drives in and around the area, he said.

However, they either could detain or nab anyone in this connection until 4:30pm, Siddique said.    

Md Nazrul Islam, deputy commissioner and Zahidul Islam, superintendent of Chuadanga also inspected the spot.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Jibon Nagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Munim Linkon, told newsmen that the three hoodlums came to the bank office by riding a motorcycle and after robbing the bank, they went towards Andulbaria area in the upazila.      

Police Super Zahidul Islam said the miscreants robbed the bank showing five staffers and officials and three security guards of the branch with toy guns in a broad daylight.

Drive is going on in and around the area to nab the miscreants, the police official said.
