The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has decided not to extend the income tax return submission deadline of November 30.

NBR Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem came up with the announcement at a press conference held at his office in Dhaka today.

He, however, said the people, who will not be able to submit their tax return by the timeframe, can apply to their respective tax offices for submission of the return after November 30.

But, the 2 percent fine after the deadline will not be considered as mandatory, he said while addressing the press conference.

The fine of the tax payers, who failed to submit their returns in due time, will be waived if they can show any logical cause for the delay, otherwise they will have to count fine, he said.

He said that the number of tax return grew to Tk63, 199 till November 26 this year compared to the same period of the previous year.

However, the income tax decreased by Tk193 crore during the same time, the NBR chairman said.

The time for submission of tax return without any penalty begins from July 1 and it will end tomorrow.

Claiming that the NBR is working to make the tax return submission system easer, Muneem said the NBR will introduce a single page return form in the next year so that the tax payers can submit the return easily.

The NBR every year organises tax fair but this year it has failed to do so due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
