Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) for the second consecutive day on Wednesday continued removing illegal shops from the streets in front of three markets in the capital's Fulbaria.
The drive – led by DSCC executive magistrates Mohammad Moniruzzaman, AH Irfan Uddin Ahmed and Tanjila Kabir Trapa – started in the afternoon.
Rasel Sabrin, DSCC's chief estate officer, said shops built in the parking space were being demolished in drive which would continue until 5 pm.
Law enforcers have been deployed at the scene, he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, the DSCC started the drive in Fulbaria. In the four-hour drive, 250 shops were demolished.
In protest, enraged shopkeepers continued to throw brickbats at police personnel and the city corporation officials. Later, the police dispersed them by throwing tear gas shells.
An official of the DSCC's revenue department said one of the conditions for allowing temporary shops on the streets is that the corporation can remove them at any time if it wishes.
The drive has been carried out following the rules, said the official.
However, shopkeepers claimed that they had paid a huge sum of money to the market committee leaders, in addition to paying the fixed rent after receiving the temporary allotment of space on the streets
