Various hospitals including Chattogram Medical College and Hospital in the port city have started rendering services to the patients of the Outpatient Department from Monday, after substantial decline in Coronavirous infection rates, officials said.
Though the hospitals did not officially stop providing services to OPDs or outdoors--- as they had been overwhelmed by excessive numbers of Covid-19 patients--- taking care of other patients was not possible for them, hospital sources said.
Also, panicked and aged patients who had been suffering from heart, kidney, lung and other ailments, stopped seeing doctors fearing Covid-19 transmission when the infection rate was increasing abruptly, physicians said.
Dr Nurul Haq, Director of Chattogram Maa o Shisu Hospital said due to massive corona patients, his hospital was unable to manage beds for other ailing people though some of them needed immediate medical attention.
All hospitals had seen super busy triage lines as Covid-19 patients kept coming in every hour.
In such a situation the number of outdoor patients had dropped, Haq said, adding that on Sunday they had a total of 1,364 outdoor patients and today (Monday) they will have more.
The infection percentage is below 5 in Chattogram and like the educational institutions, Medical College and Hospitals and Nursing Institutions are opening for their students from Monday.
Dr Sahena Akter, Principal of CMCH said following the guideline of the government, all private medical colleges and hospitals are reopening, too.
She said medical college authorities are vaccinating their students on a priority basis and some of the pupils had already got their first doses.
Besides government medical colleges, USTC Institution of Applied Health Sciences, BGC Trust Medical College, Southern Medical College, Maa o Shisu Hospital, Marine City Medical College, Chattogram International Medical College and Chattogram International Dental College also started their physical curricula from the day.
Meanwhile, in the Chattogram General Hospital, covid-19 vaccination (first dose) programme has started from Monday.
According to a new schedule, the vaccination programme will start from 2:00 pm and continue until 6:00 pm.
Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, the civil surgeon of Chattogram, said due to a rush of coronavirus patients, they had temporarily stopped their outdoor service. “We reopened our outdoor services this morning,” he told Business Insider Bangladesh.
