Dhaka (Oct 24, 2020): Renowned lawyer Barrister Rafique-ul Huq was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in Dhaka this afternoon.

He passed away during undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area early today at the age of 85.

He breathed his last around 8:30am while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Ad-Deen Hospital, hospital sources said.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held at the mosque on the hospital premise around 10:30pm where a number of people including doctors, health workers and staff of the hospital and common people attended.

Later, the body was taken to his residence in Paltan area where he was kept till 1:00pm so that people from all walks of life can place their last respects to the departed soul.

The second namaz-e-janazas was held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque while the 3rd one was held at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) premise around 2:00pm, A M Amin Uddin, president of the SCBA said.

On October 15, the eminent jurist was admitted to the hospital with old-age complications and on Saturday, he was released from the hospital as his condition improved.

He was again admitted to the hospital on Sunday as his condition deteriorated and on Wednesday he was put on life support.

Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq left behind a son -- Barrister Fahim-Ul Huq, now in Canada and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Law Minister Anisul Huq expressed deep profound shock at the demise and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.

In a condolence message, the President said, Barrister Rafique has made a huge contribution to establishing the rule of law in the country.

“Bangladesh has lost an eminent lawyer at his death,” added Abdul Hamid, now on an 11-day medical checkup in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates since October 14.

The head of the state prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Besides, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a separate message of condolence said, “Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq used to give advices on important issues regarding the Constitution.”

The prime minister recalled Barrister Rafique’s role with due gratitude as he came forward to fight legal battle to make her released from the jail following her arrest in 2007 by the then caretaker government in false case.

She prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Rafique came forward to fight legal battle to make Awami League President Sheikh Hasina free from jail following her arrest in 2007 by the then caretaker government in false case.

The renowned jurist also did the same to free BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail following her arrest in 2007 on the same ground.

Leaders of all most all political parties in the country, professional bodies and people from all walks of life also expressed their deep shock at the death and sought eternal peace of the departed soil.
