The Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the details of bank accounts of 11 journalist leaders sought by the BFIU.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), an agency responsible for investigating suspicious transactions, wrote to all banks on Sunday, asking them to provide account details of the leaders of six journalistic groups.
The President of National Press Club tops the list followed by its general secretary, DRU president and general secretary.
“The DRU believes that specific allegations of personal corruption or crime against an individual may be investigated. But the decision to name the top leaders of all journalism organizations is intentional,” said the DRU in a statement.
By seeking the bank details of the leaders, it said, disrespect and contempt have been shown towards all organisations and institutions.
“Attempts have been made to question the profession of journalism. The matter would have been somewhat reasonable if the bank accounts of all elected leaders of all other professional organizations had been sought. And the move is a threat to healthy and independent journalism,” said the statement.
The DRU also believes that it is necessary to investigate whether there is any nefarious motive of any particular group behind the BFIU’s move.
“The corrupt bureaucrats may be involved in it,” said the statement.
