Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Sunday described Maj (retd) Sinha Rashed Khan’s death as a premeditated murder and accused Pradeep Kumar Das, then officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, of masterminding it.

“It was a preplanned and unexpected killing. Ex-OC Pradeep Kumar Das masterminded it as Sinha came to know of the police official’s drug racket in the area,” said Lt Col Ashik Billah, director of RAB media wing, while addressing a press conference at its Karwan Bazar office in Dhaka this evening.

Quoting from the investigation report, Billah said Sinha — along with his associates — went to Nilima Resort to make a documentary on nature on July 7.

At one point, the retired army official came to know about the Pradeep’s drug racket in the area and met him at Teknaf police station to take his comments in this regard, Billah said.

asked Sinha and his team members to back off and threatened to “destroy their lives” if they did not comply.

Pradeep considered Sinha a threat for his drug business and started hatching a conspiracy with his associates in the middle of July to kill him (Sinha), the Rab official said citing the charge sheet.

Later, Pradeep executed the plan while Sinha was passing through a police check-post on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf marine drive in Baharchara area on July 31, according to Billah.

RAB, earlier in the day, pressed charges against 15 accused, including Pradeep Kumar Das, in connection with the case filed by Sinha’s sister Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous.

Among the accused, 12 have already given their confessional statements but ex-OC Pradeep and ex-constable Rubel Sharma did not say anything during their primary interrogations.

A total of 14 accused have so far been arrested in this connection and all are now behind bars while Sagar Deb, an assistant sub-inspector of Teknaf Police Station, is still at large.

A total of four cases were filed in connection with Sinha’s killing and of the cases, police filed three and Sinha’s sister filed another one.
