Dhaka (Dec 17, 2020): The deadly coronavirus claimed 36 more lives and infected 1,134 people afresh at different parts across the country including capital Dhaka in the last 24 hours ending 8:00am on Thursday.

With the updated figures, the total death toll from the virus reached 7,192 while the infection cases stood at 4, 96, 975, Directorate General of Health Services said in a press statement this afternoon.

Around 13,191 samples were texted at different government authorised laboratories during the same period and 1,134 samples were found positive for the virus, the DGHS said in the press statement.

Meanwhile, a total of 2, 239 people, who were undergoing treatment at different hospitals with Covid-19 infection, were released in the same period, pushing the total number of recovery to 4, 31, 590.

The DGHS data shows infection rate 86.84 percent while recovery rate 8.60 percent in the last 24 hours.

In Bangladesh, the first coronavirus case was detected on March 8 and the first death case was reported just after 10 days of the same month.

According to the worldometers, around 16, 57, 204 people have so far died while 7,46, 21, 099 people were infected from the virus across the world since its outbreak.

Besides, according to Johns Hopkins University, the United States set a grim double record on Wednesday notching more than 3,700 deaths and over 250,000 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours.

The country has seen a spectacular spike in Covid-19 infections for more than a month now, with some 113,000 people currently hospitalised due to the virus, Johns Hopkins University shows a data from the Department of Health and Human Services.
