Central leaders of the ruling Awami League has brought a peace procession in the capital protesting the recent communal violence that took place in several districts of the country.

Starting from the Awami League Central Office, the rally marched to the Central Shaheed Minar.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and several prominent leaders were present at the event. Quader announced the peace rally on Monday night after an emergency meeting held at the Bangladesh Awami League President's office in Dhanmondi.

Under the programme, Awami League and its subsidiary organisations also organised peace rallies in all districts, metropolises and upazilas of the country.

Local leaders and activists of the party are set to visit the localities where incidents of communal violence took place.

In Dhaka’s rally, Quader urged activists to build resistance against communal forces. “We will unitedly build resistance under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina,” he added.

“Sheikh Hasina and Awami League are with you (Hindus). Sheikh Hasina's government is a minority-friendly government,” he said at the rally.

He also noted Awami League activists will remain on the streets till the forces against communal harmony are tackled.

"No concessions will be made in case of communalism. The Awami League will deal with it from the streets," he added.

Earlier on October 13, tensions triggered across the country following an incident of alleged “demeaning of the Holy Quran” at a puja mandap in Cumilla.

Following the incident, attacks were carried out on puja mandaps, temples, houses, and business establishments belonging to the Hindu community in different districts.
