Two cases were lodged with Pirganj Police Station in connection with the arson attack that was carried out on Hindu Community at Majhirpara Jelepolli in the upazila on Sunday night following a social media post.

Police also arrested 41 people and produced them before a Rangpur court on Tuesday, Saresh Chandra, officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station, told the Business Insider Bangladesh.

Sub-Inspector Ismail Hossain of the police station filed for arson attack and vandalism on the Hindu people and 41 named and many unnamed people have been made accused in the case, the OC said.

Besides, another case was lodged under Digital Security Act for ‘dishonoured religion’ in a Facebook post, according to the OC.

Further detail in this regard could not be known immediatelly.

A huge number of law enforcers from different law enforcement agencies have been deployed in the area to strengthen the law and order situation, the police official said.

Responding to a query, he said the members of Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and Armed Police Battalion have been deployed here to keep the situation under control.

“Everything is running smoothly here and the law and order situation is our absolute control,” the OC said

The attack took place at Majhirpara Jelepolli immediately after tension mounted on Sunday as some people alleged that a young Hindu man of the village ‘dishonoured religion’ in a Facebook post.

According to the Fire Service, around 29 residential houses, two kitchens, two barns and 20 haystacks belonging to 15 different owners were torched in the arson attack.
