Dhaka (Dec 19, 2020): Police on Saturday claimed to have arrested three people including a local leader of ruling Awami League’s youth front Jubo League in connection with vandalism of a sculpture of British revolutionary leader Bagha Jatin in Kushtia.

The arrestees are identified as Anisur Rahman, 35, president of Jubo League’s Kaya Union unit, Sabuj Hossain, 20, and Hridoy Ahmed, 20, SM Tanvir Arafath, superintendent of police in Kushtia, told reporters.

While addressing a press conference at his office this noon, Arafat said another accused Bachchu went into hiding after the vandalism and police carried out raids at all possible hideouts in the area to arrest him.    

Some miscreants vandalised the statue of Bagha Jatin on the Kaya College premises in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia on Thursday night. Harun-ur Rashid, principal of the college, filed the case with Kumarkhali Police Station in this connection yesterday.

During the press conference, the police official said Anisur had a feud with the college authority and thus, he (Anisur) along with his associates went on the vandalism.

Jatindranath Mukherjee, popularly known as Bagha Jatin, born in Kaya village, was one of the British revolutionary leaders. The statue had been set up in front of the college with a view to uphold his memory.

Earlier, miscreants vandalised under construction sculpture of Bangabandhu at the Panchrasta intersection of Kushtia town on December 4.

Law enforces arrested two teachers and two students of a local madrasa and sent them to jail in this connection.

Following the vandalism, security measures have been beefed up in and around the area so that no one can go for such activities.
