The authorities of Khulna University of Science and Technology (KUET) announced the closure of the university until December 13 over the death of a teacher.

The decision came from the university syndicate meeting on Friday. The students have to vacant their residential halls by 4pm Friday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the teachers of the university protested the death of Prof Selim Hossain, of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. he was confined and tortured by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists of the university, alleged the protesting teachers.

Sources from KUET said a group of BCL activists intercepted Prof Selim on the campus road on Tuesday noon.

other students and teachers alleged that the BCL activists inflicted mental torture on him over the selection of a dining manager for December of the Lalon Shah Hall, where Prof Selim was the provost.

Also, CCTV footage shows that several students entered his room at around 12:30pm Tuesday and they came out of the room after more than half an hour.

Rita Khanam, wife of Prof Selim, said that after returning from the university campus, he went to the bathroom.

They broke the bathroom door as they were unable to find any response from the victim. Later, they found him lying on the floor, she said.

“We took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. But the doctor on-duty announced him dead, and he died of a cardiac arrest,” Rita said quoting doctors of the hospital.

A three-member committee has been formed to probe into the matter, the university authority said.
