HC stays case proceedings against Dr Yunus for 6 months

The High Court on Sunday stayed for six months the trial proceedings of a case filed against Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others for violating labour laws.

The HC bench comprising Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Riaz Uddin Khan stayed the trial proceedings of the case for six month following a petition filed by Yunus seeking its directive in this regard, assistant attorney general Mahfuzur Rahman Likhon confirmed it to The Business Insider Bangladesh.

The lower court had on September 12 in an order summoned the four to appear before it by October 12.

On September 9, SM Arifuzzaman, labour inspector of the department, filed the case with the Dhaka’s Labour Court against Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others for allegedly violating labour laws.

The other accused in the case are Grameen Telecom Managing Director Md Ashraful Hasan, board directors Nur Jahan Begum and Md Shahjahan.

According to case files, the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment noticed several violations of labour laws during an inspection at Grameen Telecom office.

The violations include failing to regularise jobs of 101 workers and employees, not forming workers’ participation fund as well as welfare fund, and failing to provide 5% of the company’s dividend to the workers.
