Former president Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed set a unique instance in the country’s democratic history through holding a free, fair and credible national election in 1991.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the observation while talking to reporters at a programme in Dhaka on Saturday.
“We believe that the countrymen will remember him (Shahabuddin Ahmed) as long as they will fight for the democracy and his role will remain as a unique example in the history,” the BNP leader said.
Justice Shahabuddin died in Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 10:30am on Saturday. He was 92.
Fakhrul expressed condolences at the death and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul. He also extended sympathy to the bereaved family members of Justice Shahabuddin.
After the mass movement in 1990, Justice Shahabuddin was president of the then interim government and later, he was made president by the Awami League when it came to power through 1996’s national elections.
