Demanding wage hike, readymade garment (RMG) workers from different factories again took to the streets in the city’s Mirpur and Uttara area on Monday.

The RMG workers also staged demonstrations blocking major roads in Mirpur area on Sunday to press home their demand.

Workers of all RMG factories in the area took to the major roads from Mirpur-10 to Mirpur-14 around 10am and staged demonstration demanding wage hike and pretesting price spiral of daily commodities, Sub-Inspector Helena Parvin, duty office of Kafrul Police Station, told the Business Insider Bangladesh.

The agitated RMG workers also went on vandalism and on information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control around 11:00am, the police official said.

At least, three police members sustained injuries during the violent act of the protesters, Helena Parvin said.

In some areas, police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters, according to sources.

Following the volatile situation, authorities of many schools in the area announced closure of classes and examinations.

Besides, hundreds of garment workers also staged demonstration blocking Azampur road in Uttara area around 10:00am on the same demand, Medin, duet office of Uttara East Police Station, said.

On Saturday, the protesters launched an attack on Mirpur indoor stadium and broke glasses of 7/8 panels.

Workers said there has not been any adjustment in their salaries for a long time in accordance with increasing living costs. Their discontent on the issue had reached a boiling point forcing them to take to the streets.
