Shakib demands Tk 5.8cr from Banglalink, Jamuna Bank

Cricket all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Sunday sent a legal notice to Banglalink and Jamuna Bank Limited seeking Tk 5.80 crore in compensation for breach of contract and illegal use of his brand image for business purposes by the two business entities.

Barrister Ashraful Hadi, counsel for Shakib, sent the notice through a registered post to the chief executive officer of Banglalink Digital Communications Ltd and the managing director of Jamuna Bank Ltd, asking them to pay Tk 5.8 crore within seven days.

The notice also demanded the companies to immediately stop all kinds of use—direct or indirect—of Shakib’s brand, image, advertisement, signature etc as their agreement periods have already expired.

The notice also demanded the companies refrain from this sort of illegitimate act and withdraw Shakib’s image and signature from their advertisements immediately.

According to the notice, Banglalink had entered into an agreement with Shakib Al Hasan in January 2014 with the star cricketer to serve as its brand ambassador for two years.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan signed a contract with Banglalink Digital Communication Limited on January 24 in 2014 to serve as its brand ambassador for two years and the contract ended on January 20 in 2016 and the contract was not renewed.

However, Banglalink overlooked the terms and conditions and used Shakib’s photo, and brand along with a signed image in their advertisement within Jamuna Bank ATM booth and different other places, which is a serious breach of the agreement, the notice said.

After sending notice Barrister Ashraful Hadi, counsel for Shakib, told reporters that Banglalink and Jamuna Bank authorities carried out unlawful activities and committed a severe breach of the agreement by using his client's brand, image, advertisement, signature etc without taking permission from him.

“We will file a case with the appropriate court against Banglalink and Jamuna Bank if they do not fulfil the demand of legal notice within seven days from the receipt of the legal notice,” Hadi said.
