No objection with action against persons responsible for girder tragedy: Chinese envoy

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming has said that his country will not lodge any objection if stern action is taken against the people responsible for the Uttara girder tragedy that claimed the lives of five people of a family on Monday.

Li Jiming said it after a courtesy call on Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Nuri in Dhaka on Thursday.

China Ghezhouba Group Company is implementing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project and the accident occurred when a girder was being lifted by a crane under supervision of the construction firm around 4:30pm on the day.

A high-level delegation of the contraction firm arrived in Bangladesh from China to investigate the accident, Li Jiming said.

The delegation is ready to provide necessary assistance to the probe committee formed by the Road Transport and Highways Division, he added.

Li Jiming expressed deep shock over the loss of lives and prayed for the quick recovery of the people who sustained injuries in the accident.

The committee has been asked to submit its final report within the next seven days and tough action will be taken as per the recommendations of the report.

The deceased were identified as Rubel, 50, Fahima, 40, her sister Jhorna, 28, and Jhorna’s two children Jannat, 6, and Jakaria, 2, crushed inside the ill-fated car.

Fortunately, a newlywed couple Hridoy, 26, and his wife Ria Moni, 21, also traveling with them escaped death narrowly.

On the same day, the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges formed a six-member probe committee headed by Nilima Akhter, additional secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division to investigate the accident.

The probe panel that has been asked to submit a full report within the next two days, found the contraction firm China Gezhouba Group Company Limited responsible for the tragedy.
