The country’s mobile phone operators are going to halve cost of sending SMS in Bangla language.
Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar inaugurated the service, initiated by the ministry, virtually on Saturday.
TeleTalk and Grameenphone will cut the cost from early morning on Sunday, coinciding International Mother Language Day. Robi and Banglalink will do it from March 15 and March 31 respectively.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder chaired the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister expressed his gratitude to the mobile companies for taking such an initiative to show their respect for language martyrs.
“There were some problems in writing Bangla on the internet but due to the strong initiative of the government with ICANN and Unicode, we could overcome the problem,” he said.
