The cabinet on Sunday approved a proposal raised by the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry titled ‘Agreement for Cooperation in the Legal Field’ between Bangladesh and Qatar, at a cabinet meeting.
The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
After the meeting at a press briefing, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam said, “It is a legal assistance agreement with Qatar. This does not mean that any accused would be extradited.
“It is how their legal system works, how their punishment system functions. With this, we will have an agreement with the Law Ministry of Bangladesh.”
The secretary further said, “If there is an agreement, there will be cooperation in the legal fields between Bangladesh and Qatar”.
He said Bangladesh and Qatar will be able to exchange programmes with each other through signing an MoU with their respective institutions. Bangladesh’s legal-professional people can go there and their officials can come here, he added.
The secretary said if the government thinks so, it can also contact the Qatar bar council. “How their bar council works, how our bar works. Both countries can exchange experience and expertise.”
The cabinet secretary said that the cabinet has approved the proposal to ratify the protocol 50 (a) and make 56 amendments to the international civil aviation rules. He said the number of members of the Air Navigation Commission should be increased to 21 from the current 19. It’s an international agreement, it’s been done before. So it has been brought to the Cabinet for two minor amendments, he said.
