Beximco Pharma donated negative pressure isolation canopy at the Intensive Care Unit of BSMMU.
Beximco Pharma, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies of the company, has donated some negative pressure isolation canopies to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University so that healthcare workers remain safe from contracting Covid-19 while treating patients.
The isolation canopies were developed by a team of researchers, led by Professor Khondkar Siddique-e Rabbani.
Professor Rabbani founding chairperson and now Honorary Professor of biomedical physics and technology department of Dhaka University.
The clinical requirements for the canopies were suggested by a team, led by Professor AKM Akhtaruzzaman. He is the head of anaesthesia, analgesia and intensive care medicine department of BSMMU.
Engineers of Asia Pacific University and of a non-profit manufacturing company named BiBEAT Ltd were also involved in the project, according to a Beximco press release.
Being a highly contagious virus, Covid-19 poses a greater risk of infecting other patients as well as health workers in a hospital.
The negative pressure isolation canopy will cover the Covid-19 patient on a hospital bed, especially in ICU, and protect others from getting infected by creating a negative pressure environment inside the canopy. Professor Rabbani said.
The canopy uses an ultraviolet light chamber that destroys all micro-organisms and viruses before the air is further disinfected and cleaned by a HEPA filter.
The cost of the device is also significantly low compared to those made by foreign countries.
