The Chattogram Port will start an eviction drive at the Laldiya Char in Patenga from Monday to recover 52 acres of land occupied by locals.
The decision came from an emergency meeting held on Saturday with local representatives, port officials and magistrates.
The port authority is preparing to conduct the eviction drive with six magistrates and members of law enforcement to evict 14,000 people belonging to approximately 2,300 families, according to officials.
Alamgir Hasan, convener of the Laldiya Char Rehabilitation Implementation Committee, termed the move inhuman as the authorities had decided to evict the inhabitants without providing them with shelter.
People began settling on the char since 1972.
Officials of the Chattogram Port Authority said the land belongs to the port and as per a High Court order, they are going to recover the occupied land.
Since last week, all utility facilities have been cut off and some people have already begun leaving the area.
