Rayhan’s death in police custody: Accused SI Akbar arrested

Dhaka (Nov 9, 2020): The law enforcers today claimed to have arrested Sub-Inspector Akber Hossain in connection with a case filed over death of Rayhan Ahmed, who died after allegedly being tortured inside Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet city on October 11.
SI Akbar, the prime accused of the case, was arrested from Kanaighta bordering area of Sylhet around 1:30pm, Khalequzzaman, superintendent of Police Bureau of Investigation in Sylhet told media.
The suspended police officer was trying to enter India to avoid arrest, the PBI official claimed
Raihan (34) was allegedly tortured to death in Sylhet city’s Bandarbazar police outpost on October 11 and later, he died at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
Raihan’s wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case at Kotwali Police Station the following day accusing a number of unidentified people.
Since then, Akber, a sub inspector of the police outpost went on hiding.
Then, he started living in the Khasia village across the border and the local people pushed him back to Bangladesh this morning.
On information, police rushed to the spot and arrested him, according to several locals.
At that time his dress was very much like that of the people living in the Khasia village and beaded necklace was also seen on his neck, according to eyewitnesses.
Earlier on October 15, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) ordered all immigration points of the country to be vigilant on SI Akber so that he cannot flee the country.
