Mohammed Shahabuddin, a retired judge and former commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), has been declared the 22nd president of Bangladesh.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal, on Monday, told reporters that Shahabuddin, the ruling party nominee, was elected unopposed.

The CEC declared Md Sahabuddin Chuppu, son of late Sharfuddin Ansari, as the next president of Bangladesh as per Section 7 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991 (Act No. 27 of 1991).

The president may hold office for the next five years from the date of taking charge as president of Bangladesh.

Incumbent President M Abdul Hamid assumed office on April 24, 2018. Accordingly, his five-year tenure will end on April 23, 2023.

Born in 1949 in Pabna, Shahabuddin started his career in judicial service in 1983. He was a district judge till 2006.

He discharged duties as chairman of the Labour Court in 2006, lawyer of the Supreme Court from 2008 to 2011, and commissioner of the ACC from March 2011 to March 2016.

Shahabuddin completed his MSc degree from Rajshahi University in 1974 and then he obtained an LLB degree in 1975 from the same university.

Shahabuddin has served various important state roles during his service life.
