Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero inaugurated a new embassy of the South American country in Banani area of Dhaka on Monday.

Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam was present during the inaugural ceremony.

“It’s a joyous moment. It’s not just a diplomatic gesture but indeed an emotional moment,” said Alam in his instant reaction after opening the new embassy where diplomats stationed in Dhaka from different countries were also present at the function.

has expressed its eagerness to reopen an embassy in Dhaka after 45 years following the heartfelt support of Bangladeshi people to the country’s football team in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez has written to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina saying that they have watched closely the celebrations of the friendly people of Bangladesh in support of the team.

Fernandez, in the letter, has also written that his country is working to reopen a diplomatic mission in Dhaka.

The Argentine embassy in Dhaka was closed in 1978 by the military junta that ruled the Latin American country at that time and the diplomatic operations, including visas, were managed by the embassy in India.

Argentina said it is a convenient time to reopen the embassy in Dhaka in accordance with foreign policies and based on political, strategic and commercial reasons.

Santiago Cafiero arrived in Dhaka early on Monday to inaugurate the South American country’s new embassy here and deepen trade and cultural relationships between the two countries. Argentina is reopening its embassy here after 45 years.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen received him at the VIP Lounge of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport upon his arrival in Dhaka.

The Argentine embassy in Dhaka was closed in 1978 by the military junta that ruled the country at the time.

Argentina says it is convenient to reopen the embassy to foreign policy guidelines and based on political, strategic, and commercial reasons.

Momen will hold a bilateral meeting with his Argentine counterpart at the State Guesthouse Jamuna this evening to discuss trade and investment issues.
