No information on whether Arav is arrested in Dubai: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has said that they have no information on whether Dubai police arrested Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan, the absconding accused in a police murder case.

IGP Mamun told a questioner after taking part in an Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) programme at a hotel in the Karwan Bazar area in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said a red notice has been issued against Arav Khan alias Rabiul Islam Apon, the gold trader in Dubai. “We don't have any information on whether Arav is detained there or not.”

Mamun said communication with Interpol and Dubai police is going on in this connection.

Asked about whether there will be any problem in bringing Arav back as he is now holding an Indian passport, the IGP said, "We are working on it."

On April 11, 2019, the detective branch of police submitted a charge sheet against 10 people, including Arav in connection with the murder of Mamun Imran Khan, the then inspector of the special branch of the police.

Interpol on Friday finally issued a red notice against Arav, a Dubai-based gold dealer and fugitive suspect in the murder of a Bangladeshi police officer, on its website in the red notice list.

The International Criminal Police Organization uploaded the details on fugitive Arav Khan by issuing the red notice three days after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun at a programme in Chattogram told media that the Interpol accepted the request letter sent by the Bangladesh police to issue a red notice against him.

In the red list, Arav’s picture, gender, birthplace, birthdate, age, nationality and the allegations are available.

Though he went to the United Arab Emirates with an Indian passport, his nationality was mentioned in the list as Bangladeshi.

On last Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told reporters in the weekly briefing that Arav has been under watch there.

She said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will extend the required assistance if the Home Ministry seeks it.

On March 16, a senior Detective Branch official said cricketer Shakib al Hasan and content creator Hero Alam who participated in the inauguration of Arav Jewellers in Dubai may be questioned for the sake of investigation.

On March 18, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that efforts were underway to bring Arav Khan to the country through the international police agency Interpol.
