200 maunds of Jatka seized from 5 trawlers in Meghna

Bangladesh Coast Guard seized 8,000 kg (200 maunds) of Jatka during a raid on five engine-powered trawlers in the Meghna River at Matlab North upazila of Chandpur.

Lt Commander Khandaker Munif Taqi, media officer of Bangladesh Coast Guard (Dhaka zone), said a team led by Sub-Lieutenant Fazlul Huq conducted the operation this morning in the Meghna river adjacent to Bahadurpur and Borochar area of Matlab North upazila.

“An estimated 8,000 kg (200 maunds) of Jatka was seized after searching five engine-powered trawlers (boats) during the operation,” he said.

No one was arrested during the operation.

According to the coast guard, these jatkas were being smuggled to Dhaka ahead of Pahela Baishakh.

Meanwhile, 6 teams of Chandpur river police conducted an operation in the 70-kilometre sanctuary of Padma-Meghna River.

During the drive, police destroyed a jatka warehouse in Shilarchar area of Rajrajeshwar union, west of Meghna River in Sadar upazila.

Md. Kamruzzaman, Superintendent of Police of Chandpur River Police led the operation.
