The government has appointed Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Monirul Islam as the chief of the Special Branch (SB) of Bangladesh Police.

According to a gazette notification issued by the Home Ministry on Sunday, he was given the current charge of Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) of the SB.

Md Monirul Islam, the founder chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of police, will replace SB’s outgoing additional IGP Mir Shahidul Islam, who retired today after leading the unit for more than three years.

Earlier, Monirul took over as the head of the CTTC unit of the police on February 16, 2016.

He joined the police service as an assistant superintendent of police. With a vast experience in investigating different types of complicated criminal cases, he played a vital role to curb militancy and terrorism in the country, reports BSS.

Within his 25-year service, he had been in Detective Branch (DB) for nine years and two years in Special Branch.

Monirul Islam was awarded ‘Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM)’ and ‘President Police Medal (PPM)’ for five times in recognition of his outstanding performance.

Monirul graduated in British Law from North Umbria University, the UK, completed his MA in English, MSS in Criminology and Criminal Justice and PGD in Genocide Studies from Dhaka University.

He has been teaching criminology as a part-time teacher (Adjunct Faculty) at the University of Dhaka for the last three years.
