River police station soon to protect Halda River

A river police station will be set up soon to protect biodiversity of the Halda River in the port city in line with a High Court order.

Senior police officials have recently visited the river in this regard. ABM Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat Police Station, said location of the river police station has not been decided yet.

This is the high time to release the eggs of mother fish and the police will conduct a strong surveillance to protect them, he said.

Halda River is important as it is the only place in the country where naturally-laid carp eggs can be gathered for hatching.

Last year, 25,536kg eggs were collected for hatching and to keep surveillance on the river last year eight CCTV cameras were installed at eight points at a cost of Tk4.5 lakh.
