Police arrested Mamunul Haque, joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, from a madrasa in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on Sunday.
After his arrest Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, briefed journalists about the issue.
“He (Mamunul) was under our watch following the recent mayhem Hefazat committed across the country,” Rashid said. “We found evidence that Mamunul was involved in the attacks.”
There are a number of cases against Mamunul for attacks on police and government properties, he said.
“We were investigating those cases and we found his clear involvement. That’s why we have arrested him today,” Rashid told journalists at his office at around 1-45pm on Sunday.
Mamunul incited people during the Hefazat’s mayhem on May 5, 2013 when government and private properties were vandalised and burnt down.
Again, in the last week of March when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Bangladesh, Hefazat protested Modi’s arrival and attacked police stations and public properties across the country.
