Bangladesh partners with Japanese firm to build 100MW solar plant in Feni

Bangladesh on Thursday signed an agreement with a Japanese firm to build a 100 megawatts (MW) solar power plant in Feni’s Sonagazi.
The state-owned Electricity Generation Company Bangladesh (EGCB) and Japanese Marubeni Corporation inked the letter of intent in a virtual programme.
“It is a non-binding agreement valid for one year. If the agreement finalises, the feasibility study will be conducted to assess the viability of the project,” EGCB Managing Director Arun Kumar Saha told Business Insider Bangladesh.
EGCB Company Secretary Kazi Nazrul Islam and Marubeni General Manager Hiroki Goto signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.
State Minister for Power Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid Bipu graced the event as the chief guest.
“Due to scarcity of land, solar power plants cannot be set up on a large scale. We need such technology that takes smaller land to set up the big plant,” the minister said.
Among others, Ito Naoki, ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, Engineer Belayet Hossain, chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB), Engineer Sheikh Faezul Amin, chairman of the Board of Directors of EGCB, Sawada Mitsuru, managing director, Asia Power were present in the event.
ECGB is also implementing a 250MW solar and 20MW wind power plant projects at Sonagazi.
