Cow milk yield rises by 5 times in 10 years

Bangladesh’s rank is 23rd in the global milk production index and the country has been continuing the progress continuously for the last few years, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
Bangladesh secured second position in the global goat milk production index for the last four consecutive years.
Besides, the local production of cow milk increased by five times over the last 10 years but the range of its multidimensional use is not increasing significantly.
Farmers blamed the authorities for allowing importation of milk powder for the situation.
The farmers are incurring loss due to the absence of a proper market management system of the milk product amid the pandemic of coronavirus.
the situation, Bangladesh is observing World Milk Day on Tuesday, chalking out several kinds of programmes.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has undertaken a week-long programme that began from today to highlight the significance of the day.
According to the Department of Livestock, the supply of 90 percent milk comes from cows while 8 percent comes from goats and 2 percent from buffalo.
The growth rate of milk production from the 1989-90 fiscal years to FY02 was 2.4 percent and 16.44 percent from FY10 to FY20.
Around 23.70 lakh tonnes of milk was produced in FY10 while around 106.80 lakh tonnes were produced in FY20.
The total number of dairy cows in the country is around 86 lakh. Of these, around 46 lakh are local cows and the rest 40 lakh are mixed.
At present, the per-person daily demand for milk is around 250 millilitres while the amount of production against the demand is 175 millilitres.
Around 106.8 lakh tonnes of milk are being produced per year in the country against the demand for 152 lakh tonnes.
Considering the increasing demand for milk, the government has set a target to increase production by 40.22 lakh tonnes of milk annually.
