A total of seven people were killed and three others sustained injuries as a microbus turtled into a roadside ditch in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Purnima, Ratan, Sarthak, Modhumita, Rumi, Rudrah, Hazera, Md Mosharraf Hossain, a sub-inspector of Chakaria Police Station, told the Business Insider Bangladesh.

Of the victims, six were passengers of the microbus while another one was a pedestrian, according to the police official.

The microbus was heading towards Chattogram from Cox’s Bazar and suddenly, it turned turtle into a roadside ditch around 9:58am as its driver lost his control over the steering, leaving one dead on the spot, Mosharraf said.

Besides, the other six people met the end of their lives while undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex, he said.

On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued three people who sustained injuries in the accident and sent them to the health complex.

Road Accidents in Bangladesh

Around 2,329 people were killed and 4,361 others injured in 2,159 road accidents across the country in the last six months of the current year, according to a report published in July.

The road accidents took place on various district, inter-district, national and divisional roads and highways between January 1 and June 30 across the country.

Shipping and Communication Reporters Forum (SCRF), a platform of journalists, prepared the report based on news carried by 22 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers and eight online news portals and news agencies.
