Bus and launch services in Barishal and other parts of the area resumed after around nine hours on Thursday following an intervention of the local administration.
Bus and launch services in Barishal and other parts in the area remained suspended from early hours on Thursday as transport workers blocked roads and waterways protesting Wednesday’s clash that left around 30 people injured.
“I talked to the transport workers and assured them to book the people responsible for the incident for justice,” Barishal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah told the Business Insider Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, police arrested as many as 13 activists of the ruling Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) from different parts of the city in connection with the attack on the residence of the Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).
Of the injured, five people suffered bullet wounds during the clash according to a local source.
The transport workers, supporters of Barishal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, Chhatra League and Jubo League activists, blocked the Dhaka-Barishal highway early this morning.
Besides, launch services in Barishal also remained suspended as the supporters of the mayor did not allow any passenger vessel to leave the terminal protesting the firing incident.
Earlier in the day, Parimal Chandra Roy, the city unit Sramik League president, said the law enforcers fired on the city mayor and leaders and activists of Awami League and its different front bodies without any reason.
