The friendly relations between Bangladesh and Turkey are founded on old and common beliefs, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday.

Bangladesh and Turkey – both Muslim-majority countries – believe in the practice of liberal democracy, he added.

The minister made the comments after a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Mostafa Osman Turan at the Secretariat.

The Turkish envoy lauded the Bangladesh’s economic prosperity under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also appreciated the way Bangladesh had handled the Covid-19 situation, reads a press release.

As per the decision taken in 2018, the ambassador said, “The issue of installing a sculpture of Bangabandhu in Turkey’s Ankara and similarly a sculpture of Kamal Ataturk in Dhaka is under process."

There are many sculptures across Turkey representing history and heritage, but there is no debate on the issue there, he added.

During the meeting, Quader hoped that there are more opportunities to further the existing friendship between the two countries in the areas of economy, infrastructure, employment and culture, the release added.
