CCTV cameras to be installed for securing sculptures in Chattogram

Police in the port city have decided to install CCTV cameras for the security of various sculptures, including Bangabandhu's sculptures, in Chattogram.

The move comes amid opposition from several Islamic organisations, including Hefazat-e-Islam, and the vandalism of Bangabandhu's sculpture in Kushtia, officials of city police said.

There are nine sculptures of Bangabandhu in the port city and also some murals on several walls.

Abdur Warish, deputy commissioner of Special Branch in Chattogram confirmed the news.

Though there are CCTV cameras around the sculptures in different parts of the city, police have decided to install cameras directly covering the sculptures to get a better view, he added.

Meanwhile, on November 13, a rally under the banner of Touhidi Janata Oikya Parishad was held at Dhupkhola ground in Gandaria, Dhaka to oppose the installation of a sculpture of Bangabandhu on the occasion of Mujib Year.

On the same day, acting secretary-general of Bangladesh Khilafah Majlis Mamunul Haque publicly opposed the installation of the sculpture of Bangabandhu at a function at the BMA Auditorium in the capital.

SM Mehedi Hasan, deputy commissioner (South) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police said that intelligence surveillance would be intensified to prevent any kind of occurrence like that in Kushtia.

He said security has been provided for all sculptures including those of social historians besides Bangabandhu's sculptures.

Meanwhile, the police contacted the authorities of the institutions which have sculptures and informed them about the process of strengthening security.
