Uber creates 4mn riders, 175,000 jobs in 4 yrs in Bangladesh

Dhaka (Dec 7, 2020): Uber, an app-based ride-sharing service, has served over 4 million riders and created livelihood opportunities for over 175,000 driver during its four-year journey in Bangladesh.
As Bangladesh aims to graduate from the Least Developed Country (LDC) and receive the official Developing Country status by 2024, Uber remains committed to ensuring the country’s socioeconomic growth by creating livelihood opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people here.
The app-based ride-sharing service today came up with the vow in a press statement marking the four years of its successful operations in Bangladesh.
Commenting on the four-year milestone, Uber’s Bangladesh and North & West India head, Shiva Shailendran said, “This anniversary reminds us the important role Uber plays in Bangladesh, especially in ensuring affordable and safe rides.”
Uber is committed to widen the business in Bangladesh with productive and innovative efforts to take the country forward and accelerate its economic growth, said Shailendran.
Uber has launched multiple new services for supporting the needs of its riders including package delivery service when lockdown imposed at different parts in the capital due to the outbreak of coronavirus, he said.
In August this year, Uber, the first ridesharing company to commence operations in Bangladesh, announced a partnership with bKash to provide contactless payment options for riders to help maintaining physical distancing rules amid the pandemic, Shailendran said in the statement.
Uber's technical and safety teams have been working for the last few months to build a new product for ensuring riders safe and safety during their travels.
The company launched comprehensive tech enabled safety measures that include an interactive Go Online Checklist, a mandatory mask policy, and industry first pre-trip mask verification selfies, for both riders and drivers, he said.
The safety line is in addition to the in-app SOS 999 button already available in the safety toolkit that allows riders to connect to law enforcement authorities in case of any emergency.
