Halima Mobile, a subsidiary of Cumilla-based Halima Group, has released two mobile phone sets on Wednesday.
The phone sets — T-1 and H-1 — that are launched have a Facebook browser, phone memory up to 32GB, digital camera, USB mass storage, wireless FM, MP3 and MP4 support, quad-torch and multi-language facility.
Celebrating the occasion, a grand inaugural ceremony was held at Cumilla Station Club on Wednesday evening.
Member of Parliament for Comilla-6 constituency AQM Bahauddin Bahar was present as chief guest at the inaugural function, which was chaired by Halima Group Chairman Abul Kalam Hasan Tagar.
Managing Director of the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority Hosne Ara Begum, Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Abul Fazal Mir, Cumilla Superintendent of Police Faruk Ahmed, and Cumilla Football Association President Arfanul Haque Rifat were also present at the event.
“In addition to local sales, we have a plan to export mobile phones once the Covid-19 pandemic is over,” Tagar told Business Insider Bangladesh on Thursday.
He said they have started assembling handsets recently after getting permission from the Bangladesh Telecommunications and Regulatory Authority (BTRC).
Presently, Halima Group manufactures battery, charger and power bank for mobile phones.
Halima Group started its activities in 2010 and there are currently eight companies under this group — Halima Telecom, Halima Electronics, Halima Traders, Halima World, HTE, Nuclei Global, Tip Accessories and newly-launched Halima Mobile.
Halima Group currently employs over a thousand people, most of whom are women.
Currently, local companies Walton and Symphony have mobile phone assembly plants. Nine foreign brands including Transsion, Vivo, Oppo, Samsung, 5-Star, Winstar and Lava also assemble phones in their Bangladesh plants.
