State Minister forPower, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said on Sunday that the use of wind as one of the sources of renewable energy will increase day by day.

“Wind mapping has been completed by collecting wind speed data for the purpose of verifying the feasibility of wind power generation at 9 places of the country including some coastal areas,” the junior minister said.

He was addressing a deal signing ceremony at Mongla meant for purchasing 55MW wind electricity by the government.

Wind power projects will be approved after verifying all relevant aspects, he said adding that although only 29 MW of electricity is being generated from wind currently, some 145 MW of electricity generation is underway through 3 projects.

Hamid said another 230 MW of wind power generation is under process through 5 more projects. The share of wind power to the national grid will increase day by day, he noted.

“Bangladesh took another step towards renewable energy today by signing an agreement for the construction of a 55 MW wind power plant to be set up in Bagerhat and Mongla. In addition to protecting the environment, such a project will also play a strong role in ensuring the energy security of Bangladesh.”

While reviewing a report provided by the American National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), he said, it can be seen that the coastal areas of Bangladesh, especially Dakop in Khulna, Anwara in Chittagong and the estuary zone across Chandpur, have an average wind speed of more than 6 m/s at a height of 100 meters, which is very promising for wind power generation.

The agreement was signed by Golam Rabbani, secretary to the Bangladesh Power Development Board, and Xu Wentao, managing director of Mongla Green Power Ltd on their respective behalf.

The programme was chaired by Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Md Mahbubur Rahman. Power Secretary Md Habibur Rahman and Mongla Green Power Limited Managing Director Xu Wentao spoke among others.
