Around 7.18 crore employment opportunities will be created in Bangladesh by 2050 if it becomes able to use the prospects of the Bangladesh Economic Corridor (BEC), according to a study report of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Alongside, Bangladesh’s trade volume will stand at $286 billion during the same period if the country can utilise the potential of the economic corridor properly, it said.
The ADB projected the prospects in a programme titled Bangladesh Economic Corridor Development Highlights, held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Wednesday.
The ADB, in the report, also projected that around 1.27 crore job opportunities will be created in Bangladesh by 2025 and around 4.62 crore will be available by 2040.
Planning Minister MA Mannan attended the programme as chief guest while Mostafizur Rahman, additional secretary of the ERD, and Sheikh Yusuf Harun, executive chairman of the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority, took part in the programme as special guests.
On the other hand, only 3.11 crore job opportunities will be created by 2050, 2.48 crore by 2024 and 1.34 crore by 2025 unless the potential of the economic corridor is utilised properly, it said.
The BEC will benefit the country’s northeast and southwest regions, which have long suffered from poor economic development and inadequate infrastructure.
The BEC also will help develop core industries, boost connectivity and improve critical infrastructure, as Bangladesh looks to harness technology to create millions of new jobs and accelerate its economic growth.
According to the report, the BEC has three complementary components that include a trade and transport corridor manufacturing clusters which produce goods for use in both the domestic market and international trade.
In addition, urban centres will act as major markets for products from manufacturing centres and as sources of labour technology, support services, knowledge and innovation for products to be imported through the international gateways.
