The BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT), in association with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), is going to launch three post-graduate diploma courses for mid-level managers and employees in the apparel sector to develop their professional skills.

To this end, the university signed an agreement with the EPB on Tuesday. The EPB under the commerce ministry will provide financial support to the university to run the specialised courses.

Khaled Mamun Chowdhury, EPB director-general, and Prof Ayub Nabi Khan, pro-vice-chancellor of BUFT, inked the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations at the secretariat in the capital.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, and BGMEA President Faruque Hassan were present, among others, at the event.

Tipu Munshi said the readymade garment industry needs huge skilled manpower, which is not sufficient in the country. As a result, foreign workers are needed to fill the gap, particularly in mid-level management, he added.

“With the new initiative, we hope you can make skilled mid-level managers for the sector,” the minister said.

The government is committed to helping all the emerging export-potential sectors, he added and assured that RMG sector would get all the necessary help from the government on a priority basis.

Faruque expressed his thanks to the EPB and BUFT for taking the timely initiative of skill development courses for mid-level managers working in garment factories.

Under the agreement, the university will roll out three post-graduate diploma courses in garments business management, industrial engineering and manufacturing system, and supply chain management.

A total of 105 students, 35 per course, will get the opportunities to enrol the six-month-long diploma courses.
