SPACE hosts workshop on  jute goods manufacturing at Mirpur slum

A month-long training course on jute goods mufacturing began at the Porabasti slum of Mirpur on December 5 under the initiative of local non-government organisation SPACE.

Through the workshop, the NGO plans to teach commercial manufacturing and export of 100% biodegradable and environment-friendly jute shopping bags. At the same time, it hopes the initiative will create employment opportunities for women slum dwellers — especially those who lost their jobs at garments factories amid the pandemic.

Rashedul Islam, director-general of the NGO Affairs Bureau, inaugurated the event on Saturday, reads a press release.

at the event underscored the need for integrated initiatives by all concerned for promoting environment-friendly jute goods that will gradually phase out synthetic packaging materials harmful to the environment.

The training course was organised under a project funded by Switzerland-based NGO RET International and implemented by SPACE.

Razia Sultana, local councillor, Iqbal Karim, country director of RET International, Md Salah Uddin Bepary, executive director of SPACE and local respresentatives of the slum also addressed the workshop, among others.
